When you think about a boudoir session, your mind might immediately jump to intricate lace or elaborate ensembles. But as a photographer, I’ve found that the most breath-taking images don’t come from the most expensive outfit – they come from how you feel in what you’re wearing.
If you’re feeling a bit lost on where to start, I’m here to help you curate a wardrobe that celebrates your body’s natural lines and movement. Here are a few boudoir outfit ideas that stand the test of time.

The Power of Simplicity: Comfy and Cozy
There is something incredibly intimate and raw about a simple, oversized sweater. It creates a soft, approachable vibe that lets your personality take center stage.
- The Look: A chunky knit sweater or a soft cashmere piece.
- Why it Works: It allows us to play with textures and “peek-a-boo” shots, focusing on a shoulder or the curve of a leg without the distraction of busy patterns.
A Personal Touch: Borrowed from Your Partner
One of my absolute favorite looks is incorporating something that belongs to your partner- a crisp button-down shirt, a well-worn sweater, or even a tie.
- The Look: An oversized white dress shirt left partially unbuttoned.
- Why it Works: It adds a layer of sentiment and story to your images. It’s effortless, timeless, and sexy.

The Art of the Robe
A sheer or silk robe is a boudoir staple for a reason. It provides a beautiful sense of movement and allows us to play with light and shadow.
- The Look: Long, floor-length lace or a shorter, delicate silk wrap.
- Why it Works: Robes are incredibly versatile. We can drape them off one shoulder or use them to create a sense of mystery and flow in your natural poses.
Where to Find the “Wow” Factor
If you want something a bit more structured or avant-garde, I highly recommend checking out Thistle and Spire or Valgina’s Lingerie. Their pieces are wearable art – think architectural lace and unique cutouts that highlight the body in all the right places.
When looking to buy boudoir outfits, I always suggest looking for pieces that offer structure without hiding your shape. Pro tip: I generally recommend staying away from “baby doll” styles or very loose, bulky pieces, as they can often hide the beautiful curves we want to celebrate!

To Heel or Not to Heel?
While a stunning pair of boudoir heels can certainly add a touch of “Lady Boss” energy and lengthen the leg, I’ll let you in on a secret: I mostly prefer barefoot photos. There is a grounded, organic feel to bare feet that aligns perfectly with a natural photography style. It feels more “at home” and authentic. However, if you have a pair of heels that makes you feel like a million bucks, bring them along! We can always start with them and transition into that raw, barefoot vibe as the session progresses.

Final Thoughts: The Pinterest Connection
Remember, these are just starting points! I love it when my clients get creative. If you’ve found a specific look that resonates with you, add it to your Pinterest board and share it with me. Whether it’s a high-fashion editorial concept or a quiet, “morning-in-bed” feel, we’ll work together to make sure you feel entirely like yourself.
